Nintendo has been dominating the gaming industry all year thanks to the Wii – but they were beginning to get worried when Microsoft’s Xbox 360 began to take the lead after they released the much anticipated Halo 3. But during the week of Thanksgiving Nintendo had a big grin on its face after they raked in more money than they have ever made.
From the 18th to the 24th Nintendo sold over 350,000 Wii consoles and over 653,000 DS units. That doesn’t include all of the games and gaming accessories. “Wii reached 5 million sold in the United States faster than any video game system in history,” the company said, “after only 12 months of availability.”
Yet, even with this good news the president of Nintendo, Reggie Fils-Aimefurther is dissapointed that they couldn’t generate more of a demand for it during the off season. They don’t believe that one week of great sales will make up for other days missed.
“A shortage benefits no one,” he said. “We’re disappointed. This was all about how we didn’t accurately estimate demand. We need to be more bullish about the potential for the Wii.”
