Teenagers and wealthy adults won’t be the only ones to enjoy the benefits from having a laptop computer. Soon every schoolchild in developing countries will be getting $200 laptop computer given to them by a non-profit organization that calls themselves the ‘One Laptop Per Child Program’.
They started work on building the ‘XO’ laptops this week at a Chinese factory that is maintained and run by Quanta Computer Incorporated. If all goes well and on track every child will be receiving their laptop by the end of the month.
Nicholas Negroponte – the man responsible for creating the program – stated that Quanta was preparing to build around 250,000 XO computers this year. He did not know exactly how many children would be getting them stating that it all depended on how much the International consumers ordered.
The first to receive this generous laptops are the children in Uruguay, Peru, and Mongolia. The children will be able to use these laptops at school and will also be allowed to take them home with them.
The XO laptops are great for children because they are tough, do not use as much power as most, and can even be recharged by hand. The ‘One Laptop Per Child Program’ has branched out and is allowing residents from North America to help out by ordering laptops for children overseas.
